Harris Hawk "Ed"
This Harris hawk is a young male. A captive bred bird, he was
parent raised, as opposed to hand fed, in an outdoor flight
pen called a mews. The Harris hawk is indigenous to the
dessert southwest. The only bird in the class Parabuteo the
Harris is one of the most popular hawks flown in falconry
today in the US. They offer a compromise, almost as fast as
the accipiter, (Coopers hawks, Goshawks) they can successfully
hunt birds while having the sturdy physical and stable mental
attributes of the slower, stronger, buteos. (Red tails, Rough
Shoulders, Broad winged Hawks)
My children named this hawk after the actor Ed Harris.
Discovered by John Audubon, it is reported that he named the
hawk after a friend, Colonel Harris, who was with Audubon when
he first sighted the bird.
