Q.
What vaccinations do I need for my dog before beginning training at Ponderosa Kennels?

A. Your dog needs a current Rabies, DHLPP, and Bordetella or equivalent. We encourage but do not require vaccination against Coronavirus and Giardia.

Q.   What do you do about monthly heartworm medications?

A. We require all dogs in residential training at Ponderosa Kennels to be on heartworm prevention. A monthly preventative is included in the training fee. Talk to your vet to see if the new six-month prevention shot is right for your dog. Do not start any heartworm prevention program without testing your dog first. See your vet.

Q.   How old should my pup be before I start training?

A. Pups should be 6 months old before beginning formal training at Ponderosa Kennels. However, your puppy’s education begins the moment you take him home. You can and should begin play training as early as seven weeks.

Play retrieve, swimming, and introduction to the basic obedience exercises are wonderful for the new pup. Teach everything you can but do not begin corrections until later. Watch the training articles page for upcoming articles on puppy training.

Come visit us and bring your pup. We’d be happy to show you some puppy early-start training ideas. With the proper early start your pup will find later training more enjoyable. He will have formed a closer bond with you, and you will have a head start on a lifetime together in the field.

Q.   What is day training? Do I have to have a dog in full-time training to day train?

A. Day training is training on a day by day basis. Owners bring their dog, typically once a week or more, and we teach them how to train their dog. No. In fact most of the people who bring their dogs out to day train do not have any dog in full-time training with us.

Q.   Does my dog have to have a certain amount of training or experience to day train?

A. No. Dogs of all levels are welcome in day training. We customize the training experience for your dog’s skill and training level. We will evaluate your dog and help you develop a training plan to meet your training goals.

Q.   Do I need a reservation to day train?

A. Yes, call in advance for scheduling and training locations.
